TRAVEL TRAVAILS... (Part 2)

...go on with the story she said! So here I am again. :p
So where was I? Oh yeah...I remember. I have been directed to the US Airways check in counter by the friendly folks at Philippine Airlines. I fall into line in a leisurely manner and while away time looking at the self check in terminals looking at how people are using them so I will not need to embarass myself when I need to do the same at a future date... what with being a continental travel virgin. Boy, was I going to be baptised soon enough.

15 minutes later I'm smiling at the counter lady as I hand show i.d. and my itinerary to claim a boarding pass. A few minutes pass as she taps away at the computer. Then frowns... Somewhere at the back of my head a buzzer gently awakens and gradually grows in volume...

"Sir, youre not on our system. But dont worry...I checked...and apparently its a United Airways flight that you've been rebooked into. Don't worry its only a 15 minute walk to Terminal 1".

I stretch my legs to warm up...

At this point its only fair to mention that there ARE free shuttles from Terminal to Terminal...but theyre not as fast and effective as a brisk walk. An you know...me being in peak physical condition (some of you know I sasy this with sarcasm...others...know that I smirk as I type this) and all...and with my regular jogging schedule...the choice was easy to make. A brisk walk across...and the United lady tells me... "We can't find you on our system Sir. Maybe you should contact Philippine Airlines since they rebooked you after their flight cancellation"

Things are not looking good. And I havent had time to think about the fact that my bag has already been onward checked in and loaded into godknowswhat airlines winging its way to heavenknowswhereville.

I'm really sinking my teeth into this brisk walk thing by now. I dont even stop and stare at the Ford GT that slowly cruises by to pick up some lucky bastard. I don't even slow my pace...forget taking a quick picture (too touristy anyway!). I'm soldiering on till this thing is fixed...

At the PAL (Phil Airlines) counter:
Me being me...I'm only showing slight signs of irritation. Trying to think of how these guys deal with so many pissed of passengers everyday and not wanting to add to the statistic...
"Could you please check this Ref Number Youve given me...the code doesnt put me on any of the systems you told me I have been rebooked in"
"Sure sir...just give me a moment!" ....and the countergirl disappears into some inner recess of the terminal.

10 minutes later...

"Sorry sir, I apologise I think theres something entered incorrectly. But the rights to correct are are with Northwest as theyre our codeshare partner. We need a paper copy of a ticket issues by Northwest authorising us to make the changes. Can you please get that so I can work on this? I'd like to accompany you but we're short staffed at the moment and we need to man the counter"

Long story short...I now head to Northwest...and explain my situation to a completely bewildered agent. Sometime about now I lose it...and have these guys call PAL and sort things out. Even after which there is another final race to the US airways terminal to make the flight that I am FINALLY booked into.

My next destination is Raleigh, NC. I am flying there via Philadelphia. Because of the delay and the connections I have missed...I wont be able to join the team visiting the first of several stops on our Pan America trip.

But hell, I'm on my way. So alls well that ends well right?
Wrong.
Remember my checked in baggage?

TRAVEL TRAVAILS... (Part 1)

I think i'll hit the pause on the musical meanderings of my youth to tell you folks (...making that a plural was a leap of faith...) about my whirwind tour of the usually united states of america. And I DO mean whirlwind. 5 days. 5 cities to visit. And thanks to flight connections...the 5 city count gets bumped up to 9.

In other words...while I really only spent time in Knoxville, Raleigh, Memphis and Las Vegas...i technically visited Philadelphie, Atlanta, Charlotte, LA and Vancouver too.

Its a funny feeling not knowing what exactly the time of day is. Or which day of the week.

And that wasnt the only interesting part of the trip.

It started...as most things do...at the beginning. I was supposed to fly out on a cool Sunday evening and on reaching the airport...I head to the check in counter...to see a bright board cheerily announcing "Flight Cancelled". A little perplexed...I headed to the airline counter where the staff nonchalantly inform me that they can get me onto a flight thats leaving the next morning. Basically a 12 hour delay. Which effectively screws my tight itenerary of connecting flights.

They do however reassure me that since this whole fiasco is basically their fault...they will arrange everything for me so that i still make my connecting flights.

Little did I know what I was submitting myself to.

Happily accepting their 'Remuneration for Hassles Caused' token amount...I trudged back home...slept...and promptly arrived the next morning to check in my bags and catch my new flight.

After an otherwise uneventful 13 hour flight (spent chanting to myself that i will never fly economy again on a long haul trip...blissfully unaware that im not going to get an upgrade on my return trip)...I land in LAX with about 2 hours to make my connection to my next destination to Phoenix (AZ) and then to my final destination Raleigh (NC).

Land in LA...quite thrilled to see that theres some amount of bite in the air. Just the right amount of cold. Negotiate the maze of customs, through to the ground staff of Philippine Airlines (the culprits in this saga). Since i was xferring from an international flight to a US domestic flight I needed to claim my checked in baggage and then re check them in into the domestic connection.

Now if you have been following this story (and its quite possible that you may have drifted off in between...) you will remember that i was rebooked onto a different airline thanks to my original flight being cancelled. So I checked in my bags to the smiling ground staff from PAL who were confident in their assurances that my bags would be checked into the correct flight...

Just to be sure...I ask show them my onward airline code...and they tell me that its a US airways flight (the flight code started was US 104 or something)...so confident in how well my trip is going...I saunter over to the US airways check in counter...enjoying the fresh air as I walk outside to cross to the other side of the terminal (I quickly found out how big LAX is...and how much walking I would have to do...).

...more later.

Music Is The Soundtrack To Our Lives (...contd.)

..carrying on for my audience of 1 (possibly 2).

On with the list they say!

4. Bad - Michael Jackson

http://youtube.com/watch?v=uG5NhkxQJQc&feature=related

Hearing this song never fails to remind me of our old and first 'hi-tech' double slot casette player/recorder/radio player. And of my mother borrowing the 'Bad' album to bring home and copy on our spanking new stereo system. Of course this was before sticky piracy regulations figured in popular cosciousness. And yes, Mum's an MJ fan.

Then again...I too believe that hes one hell of a performer. I just wish he would stop the antics he occassionally descends into. Then again...all those face and complexion altering chemicals MUST have been injected fairly close to the brain. Side effects must be inevitable.

Oh and before I forget...I used to get into endless debates whether "Shamone/Shambone" is a real word...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamone

Thank God for Wikipedia. And the little people in front of tiny computers who industrially populate it with information.

5. I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a7E6yyUNVo&NR=1

From piracy...to the weekly pop show that me and Smita used to be fairly religious about watching - Top of The Pops. And she used to insist on dancing along.

Sigh...the stuff I have put up with! :p

Before I continue I will HAVE to also provide an honourable mention to Rick astley for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOU8GIRUd_g ... a really cheesy song but one which inexplicably stuck on in my weak childsize head...and the fondness for which continues to haunt me to this day. Oh..and this honourable mention...wasnt because of my own fondness for the song...but due to the aforementioned music pirate moms incessant playing of the track (in loop) on our stereo

6. My Love - The London Boys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU5IZrjNyTk&feature=related

I'm chuckling to myself. This whole attempt at thinking through and building the soundtrack to my life waala project is fast turning into a confession of highly questionable musical taste.

Having said that, I DO strongly stand by my belief that regardless of how sad/cheesy/bllecch these genres may seem...and how 'cool' it may seem to say 'yuckkk!' to them...if the tune is embedded into your musical history early enough...at a point in time when the only attraction to a song was its catchiness/stickiness/lyrical simplicity...then inevitably those tracks will manage to carve out a sweet spot for themselves in our tastes.

Besides...I'm way beyond the point where any amount of effort can retrieve my cool quotient in any case. A fact I am sure Shweta will gleefully attest to. ;)

So might as well lay out my musical conscience...and embrace it! :)

Oh and before you think of making fun of the London Boys... Dont. They died in a tragic accident in the late 90's.

Save the vitriol for Mandy Moore/Hillary Duff/ (dare I say it) Britney and their ilk.

7. Helter Skelter - The Beatles

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP0u9HUo1-Q&feature=related

The first Beatles song I heard. Or consciously remember hearing...and then being hooked enough to attempt to find out who sang it...and what else they belted out.

Finally, I move from Pop...to Rock. Probably around 6th standard. In Pune.

Not that this transition was to be of any any consequence to the world in general...I for one, am eternally grateful.

If you have never heard it (gasp!!! the blasphemy!!!)...do give it a listen. Its raucous, its raw and its ohhhhh sooooo gooood. Despite Sir Pauls slightly weak voice.

Oh and the choice of You Tube (what would i have done without you!) video is based solely on the absolutely brilliant combination of a fantastic song paired with the trippy visuals from the best (Yes...yes...THE best...not just One Of The Best) Sci Fi movie of all time...

Music Is The Soundtrack To Our Lives

I was thinking about tastes the other day। Wandering musings on the personal musical likes and dislikes of people. Comparisons with my own. Similarities. As well as violent dislikes. And in my own case, songs, especially the ones i cherish the most, are intricately embedded into memories of specific phases/moments in the past.

I guess this is what I mean when I say they're the soundtrack to our lives.

This is a chain of thought that occured to me before as well...just one I never really picked up and explored. So after watching a rerun of Almost Famous for the umpteenth time...I thought it would be a good idea to maybe put down my own soundtrack. So here goes...

1. Dekha Ek Khwab - Silsila
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpbLrEZ88Aw&feature=related

This must have been roundabout 1st or 2nd Standard I think. Suffice it to say, its so far back in the mists of time I dont even remember exactly when. I DO however, remember the song...and a dimly lit fauji theatre...and the fact that the movie was a sad one (in my memory at least...havent seen it recently enough to know whether it had a sad/happy ending). On the other hand...the sadness may have been also at the sight of Amitabh and Rekha trampling underfoot some really expensive looking tulips.

2. The Thundercats Theme Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na8ThDftsKk
Earliest memories from the house in Croydon. Coming back from school to catch the weekly update on Liono and friends. And it used to kill me that it was a weekly update. Not a daily one. And sharp as I was...I knew that these shows were created from scratch by a team of artists who had to painstakingly draw out the pictures that formed the cartoon. And I figured that the reason the cartoon shows were weekly were because thats how long it took them for the production of 1 shows worth of artwork. Reference point used here were the Tom & Jerry and assorted Hanna Barbera shows...which were all so ollldddd....so ofcourse there were piles worth of cartoons from years ago...hence these could be screened as a daily show.

I've been brilliant since childhood.

Talking of deeply embedded, much cherished TV tunes from childhood...here are a few others:
a) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSDeoO-j3G0&feature=related
b) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AIFoBRIny0&feature=related
...it speaks volumes for the brilliance of the concept that a show with such an absolutely cringe inducing opening theme (...and I'm not even getting into the lyrics yet) can be such a success. Then again, who gives a damn about the opening. The cartoon still rocks!
c) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm2JpVV1VQM
...I don't care if he tried to sing. I dont care if he continued in Baywatch far beyond cosmetic surgery could be of help. I dont care if he is now a judge on suspect talent shows.
One of his first primetime shows still redeems him in the face of these otherwise irredeemable sins. One opening track thats still totally awesome!
d) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls8mKdKYQV8
Before we had bling...we had B.A. Baracus.

3. Neighbours Theme Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U8n6Pzofyg&feature=related

As you may notice...my audio horizons are generally being expanded via the video medium at this point. In any case...Neighbours was my introduction to the soap opera. And the terrible addiction it can trigger in otherwise perfectly normal people. Ask my mother.

Also, see if you can recognise Kylie Minogue. This was the platform that introduced her to the world. So it DID do some good.

The reason the song figures on this list of course, is that we used to hear it with such frequency...that we knew it by heart. And yeah...for a kid...its catchy...easily remembered lyrics etc. etc. ( I guess thats a default requirement for TV theme songs/music. ) So early evenings were punctuated with this ditty. Day in and day out. And I have to say we followed the story quite religiously. :)

...To Be Continued.

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Ok...so I posted without really looking at old posts.

And i realised that my opening was identical to the opening i made (with far less enthusiasm i must admit) roughly...hmmmm what would be....like 2 bloody years ago!!!

Made me chuckle at my total lack of creativity! Though the press release is that it reflects my consistency in style...

So with this SECOND post...i now officially beat my last attempt.

Here's to persistence.
Wow. Its been a long time.

And as opening lines go...thats pretty cliched. So yes...I'm pretty aware of that. But still...its true.

So why now? I guess its prodding from certain rather important people (well...technically...person)...as well as the realisation that banging away on the keyboard is good for the nerves.

Bad for the keyboard...but definitely good for the nerves. Maybe it'll shave off a few sticks off the already (recently) curtailed intake of good old nicotine.

So whats in store for you my captive audience of 1? Maybe 2...

1. My thoughts on goings on around the world...like whether the Dalai Lama really is the nefarious, evil soul that the Chinese governement claims he is... Or what I think the exit strategy/end game in Iraq should really be (Hint: It involves a lot of a brand named 'Taybeh'. Go ahead...google it. I know you will.)

2. A list of my favourite songs. And why theyre there in the list. This is something i've been long meaning to do. Should be an interesting exercise. And fun. :)

In case you had any suspicions to the contrary...the above is merely to remind myself of things i mean to do.

A note to self...just posted on the front door for the world and casual passers by and homeless transients to peer at.

So in 'closing'...Hello again people. :)

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Wow.

Its been a while!

But i've been hearing frm more than a few people that i should start typing again. More than just office emails!

So Sandy, Vinod and Joey ...this return from the hiatus is thanks to your prods. :)

So...

...

...

... thinking what to write...

...maybe i should explain why i stopped. For one i suddenly found no time anymore (which speaks volumes for how much time i spent buried in cases and textbooks while in AIM) and secondly, (and equally importantly) i lost access to 24x7 broadband internet thanks to the dorm!

All said and done i guess one reason to return is that i miss writing.

I have a childhood memory...probably from 2nd or 3rd Standard ...of me actually enjoying the task of copying text from a book in longhand in the special books we had to use in English classes that were meant to improve our handwriting.

(and that last sentence also brings back the only clear memory of teacher feedback from primary school - "His writing has brevity...but lacks conciseness in sentence construction". Personally, I think the old lady held a grudge because of a certain water balloon incident...)

So anyways, as i was saying (or trying to) - while the mechanical act of putting pen to paper (or in this case...finger to keyboard) does offer some kind of calming peace (the pleasure of monotony?), i guess the effort of trying to clarify your thoughts and the process of thinking of the best way to articulate it to the world is something thats satisfying in a way i cant put a finger on...

Tuesday, March 16, 2004

I know I've not been here for a long long time. I think I just lost the motivation to vent!! (..joke!) Anyways, obviously my return to these parts of the web has not been self driven. I owe that to someone else. :) *happy thoughts* Marishka...here's to you! ;) Its been wierd (a very nice wierd) and the greatest fun to find out how much we have in common!

So a quick update on what Ive been upto on this side of the world. Well, the whole "education" thing is fast coming to an end. Its been an enjoyable ride, wit its own share of bumps and highs. Some of the bumps felt like the end of the world..and a few of the highs were really good (and not all of them were artificially induced!).But it takes the end of the road to give perspective to the journey. And I must say that I am definitely riding the biggest high since coming here! Anyways, theres an alarm bell ringing inside my head which probably is meant to warn me when i get too deep. So Im taking the hint...for now. Because Im certain to revert to boredom a while later. Dont say I didnt warn you. hehehe

Coming back to the update...well theres no job with my name on it yet. But Im sure there will be yet. Good things come to those who wait and all that! Plan to go to Singapore after to check out the scene there. Am not really sure where exactly I will end up.

Anyways...on with the happy thoughts! Have been having absolutely greatest week. Met the nicest bunch of people. Just served to reinforce the belief that to find the most interesting people here, you just have to go beyond the boundaries of
AIM. Thank God for creating advertising. (naysayers...please refer to the story of Adam & Eve. Remember the Snake? well...there u go...an evil incarnation of advertising)*tongue-in-cheek*

shit...got beaten offtrack with my own sidelines to the main point. sorry.

anyways...all i was trying to say before i went into that whole adam n eve story (which might turn out to be quite controversial...guess i'll find out tomorrow! ;) hehehe) was the fact that advertising is just such a great haven for all these crazy cool people who most of us are never lucky enough to that. if i had a drink handy...i think i would have drunk to that!

ok...well im off to bed now. Good Night world.
